George Airport Set for R310 Million Expansion – Doubling Passenger Capacity

Introduction:

George Airport, a key travel hub in the Western Cape, is about to undergo a major transformation. Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has allocated approximately R310 million to expand and modernize the terminal, effectively doubling its passenger capacity from 900,000 to about two million per year.

What to Expect from the Expansion:

Construction Timeline:

  • Terminal Expansion: October 2026 – July 2028
  • ARFF Emergency Road Upgrade: Starts November 2025
  • Perimeter Road Upgrade: Starts February 2026
  • Runway 11/29 Rehabilitation: Starts October 2026

Key Improvements:

  • Upgraded check-in area, baggage processing, and security screening
  • Expanded departure lounge, boarding gates, and arrivals baggage claim
  • Enhanced public concourse, retail outlets, airline offices, and commercial lounge spaces
  • Redesigned frontage roadway and landside parking areas

Minimising Disruptions:

Acsa has assured travelers that while the refurbishment will affect key passenger processing areas, every effort will be made to minimize operational disruptions throughout the construction phase.

Runway & Navigation Upgrades:

In addition to terminal expansion, Acsa has approved R9.4 million to upgrade the Instrument Landing Systems from Category 1 to Category 2. This upgrade, scheduled for May–November 2026, will enhance flight safety and reliability.

Why It Matters for Travellers:

The expanded capacity and infrastructure upgrades will significantly improve passenger experience, streamline airport operations, and support the growing demand for domestic and regional travel to and from George.

Warning: Scam Travel Adverts Targeting South Africans

Warning: Scam Travel Adverts Targeting South Africans

Introduction:

We’ve recently seen an alarming rise in bogus flight and travel advertisements targeting South Africans, particularly on social media platforms like Facebook. These scams lure customers with promises of unbelievable airfare deals from well-known airlines, such as Emirates, only to trick them into handing over personal information.

How the Scam Works:

  1. Facebook Ad – A post appears offering heavily discounted international flights.
  2. Questionnaire Trap – Clicking the ad prompts users to fill in a quick survey:
    1. Are you flying in the next few months?
    2. Are you over 60?
    3. Enter your WhatsApp number to claim your deal.
  3. Fake WhatsApp Call – A scammer contacts the victim on WhatsApp. In one reported case, the scammer asked for a verification code sent via WhatsApp – giving them remote access to the victim’s phone.
  4. High-Pressure Tactics – Scammers often call from noisy environments to create urgency and confusion.

How to stay safe:

  • Talk to Your Travel Advisor First – If a deal looks too good to be true, it likely is.
  • Never Share Verification Codes – No legitimate airline or agent will ask for your WhatsApp verification code.
  • Check Official Channels – Always verify promotions directly on an airline’s official website or with your trusted travel advisor.
  • Report Suspicious Activity – If you suspect you’ve been targeted, contact the South African Cybercrime Division or your local police station.
