Introduction:
We’ve recently seen an alarming rise in bogus flight and travel advertisements targeting South Africans, particularly on social media platforms like Facebook. These scams lure customers with promises of unbelievable airfare deals from well-known airlines, such as Emirates, only to trick them into handing over personal information.
How the Scam Works:
- Facebook Ad – A post appears offering heavily discounted international flights.
- Questionnaire Trap – Clicking the ad prompts users to fill in a quick survey:
- Are you flying in the next few months?
- Are you over 60?
- Enter your WhatsApp number to claim your deal.
- Fake WhatsApp Call – A scammer contacts the victim on WhatsApp. In one reported case, the scammer asked for a verification code sent via WhatsApp – giving them remote access to the victim’s phone.
- High-Pressure Tactics – Scammers often call from noisy environments to create urgency and confusion.
How to stay safe:
- Talk to Your Travel Advisor First – If a deal looks too good to be true, it likely is.
- Never Share Verification Codes – No legitimate airline or agent will ask for your WhatsApp verification code.
- Check Official Channels – Always verify promotions directly on an airline’s official website or with your trusted travel advisor.
- Report Suspicious Activity – If you suspect you’ve been targeted, contact the South African Cybercrime Division or your local police station.
